Fossa della Garofala

'Fossa della Garofala' is a portion of Conca d'Oro that has survived urbanization. The Fossa della Garofala, enclosed between the buildings of Corso Pisani and the university citadel, invites the discovery of a forgotten landscape of Palermo. The "journey through time" traverses the fifteen hectares of the area that was part of the elegant park of Luigi Filippo d’Orléans and runs along the original course of the Kemonia River. The name comes from the first owner whose identity is known, Onorio Garofalo, in the late 1400s. After three centuries, the land was purchased by the Prince of Aci, who built an experimental agricultural station here. In 1809 Luigi Filippo d’Orléans set up a large park outside the walls, which also featured a greenhouse.
